CINE
The Still Image and the Labour Process: An Agitka
Dir. Ailín Ó Dálaigh, 2021
Shot on Standard (Double) 8mm film
Official Selection Victoria Film Festival
The Still Image and the Labour Process: An Agitka is an experimental short film made in the style of a silent Soviet agitational-propaganda short (agitka). In proper Soviet, or perhaps Vertovian, fashion, it argues through intertitles and montage that the cinema is a weapon for destroying the commodifying effects of still photography

Progress Workbook
Dir. Ó Dálaigh, 2022
How often does a trailer mis-advertise a film? I would argue this is a frequent occurrence, mandated to get “butts in seats.” Even one of my favourite trailers, for Aleksei German’s Hard to Be a God, woefully mis-advertises its film by the inclusion of music alone (yet that’s what makes the trailer so great)
The trailer I have posted here fits into the category of misleading advertisement (especially thanks to its quasi-adoption of JLG’s style, RIP)
While working on movies, I frequently arrive at a situation where I have much of the photography for the picture complete, but am still waiting on either other parts of production or film from the lab. Here I end up, impatiently, editing a “trailer” (a hilarious idea for a short film) or a separate micro-short from the film’s footage (or occasionally other footage). GRINDCORE VACATION produced PC-4L in this fashion, THE STILL IMAGE AND THE LABOUR PROCESS: AN AGITKA produced ONEIROLOGUE, and now A PERSONAL NOTION OF PROGRESS has produced this “trailer,” which will, if plans go accordingly, be different from the finished short film
Shot on Kodak Vision 3 16mm film with a Krasnogorsk-3

Grindcore Vacation
Shot on digital and super 8mm
GRINDCORE VACATION melds the expository documentary, diary film, and live performance footage to produce a portrait of the musicians who play grindcore, an extreme sub-genre of punk/metal characterized by high speed and full volume. Shot during a weekend trip from Victoria BC to Dallas TX for a single DIY concert, it interviews members of Deterioration, Cognizant, and Imperial Slaughter. Live concert footage combines with interviews and Super 8mm film to create an impression of the people who play grindcore, why they love the genre, and their experiences as practitioners of the niche style
